Yemen, The Socotra Archipelago
The Socotra Islands are the jewels of Yemen and the whole Arabian region. It is indeed a place of botanical and zoological treasures nurtured by many generations of the islanders, the keepers of the unique cultural traditions of Yemen. For centuries, the Socotra Islands have been out of early explorers’ and naturalists’ attention. But by the end of 90-s they became a center of attraction never seen before especially from those who are interested in their economic development and natural environment preservation.

Sailors, who came to Socotra at the end of the southwest monsoon, could see what was happening on Socotra in the summer. The weather is very different from the usual. In the mountains is cool and cloudy. On the north shore of Socotra blowing very strong wind.
60-foot catamaran with a Russian-Ukrainian crew came to Socotra. They were the first who visited Socotra in the season the south-east monsoon, which still strong now.
Southwest monsoon wind becomes very strong on the northern coast of Socotra in the summer months. At same time there is rainy and cold weather in the mountain part of Socotra.
Two more sailing boats have visited Socotra on their way to the Red Sea. German catamaran and Irish yacht spent on Socotra for about a week. It was a pleasure to meet interesting people, some of them live aboard for more than 10 years.
Sailors is lucky people. Now they are the only ones who can come to Socotra and see our beautiful island. The rest are waiting until direct flight from Dubai starts.

Good news! November 27 will start a new direct flight from Dubai to Socotra.
Socotra was hit again by the storm. A lot of destroyed houses all over the island. There are several dead. Half of our restaurant was destroyed. The ship carrying humanitarian aid ran aground during a storm.
